Toothache

Impaction
Impacted teeth typically push adjacent teeth out of position. This problem can be fixed by extracting these teeth.
Periodontal Disease
If your teeth, especially the wisdom teeth, prove too difficult to reach when it comes to cleaning, it’s advisable to have them extracted. This preventative procedure inhibits the accumulation of bacteria, which can result in dental cavities and gum disease.

How Teeth Are Extracted
Simple Extraction
If the affected tooth is above the gum line, a simple tooth extraction would be ideal for you. You’ll be given a local anesthetic to make the extraction process as painless as possible. The dentist will then pull out the tooth gently.
Surgical Extraction
You may need a surgical extraction if the affected tooth is:
- Below the gum line
- Broken off at the gum level
- Partly showing through the gum
Your dentist will administer a local anesthetic before making a small incision. They will then pull back the gum and remove the tooth. Next, the dentist will cover the extraction area with a swab and ask you to bite down on it until the bleeding stops.
A tooth extraction procedure typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes. Most patients feel no pain throughout the process save for some pressure exerted during tooth removal. It is important to let your local dentist in New Jersey know of any medications you are using before the procedure.
What to Expect After Tooth Extraction
You may experience some pain and swelling, which should vanish in a day or two. There’s no cause for alarm if you encounter some bleeding and discomfort. Your dentist can prescribe pain relievers to ease the discomfort.
You’ll typically recover fully from a tooth extraction in about five days. It’s important to follow all of the dentist’s instructions. You don’t want to do anything that will jeopardize the recovery process.
